Chapter 27: The Settlement

Months passed before I received the final documents related to my property claim.
Valerie’s obligations included restitution for damage not otherwise recovered and compliance with the conditions imposed by the legal process.
The insurer handled its own recovery questions separately.
I did not receive a dramatic stack of cash or an apology large enough to erase the disruption.
I received paperwork, scheduled payments, and an end to the direct interference with my home.
That was how accountability often looked in real life.
It moved through small, specific obligations rather than one unforgettable public speech.
Graham’s separate case continued to involve questions about prohibited contact,

threats, and records gathered from multiple sources.
I was told that I might be asked to testify again.
I kept my notes and answered official requests.
I did not claim to know every outcome.
Rebecca and Noah gradually established a safer routine together.
Valerie’s relationship with them remained complicated and subject to boundaries they had a right to set.
I saw her occasionally at the grocery store.
She no longer stopped me to argue.
Sometimes she nodded.
Sometimes she looked away.
I never mistook her silence for proof that everything was healed.
It was simply the absence of another attack.

After what had happened, that distinction mattered.
